Some thoughts, some rants, some info...

Hey Guys,

Thanks for stopping by to read :-) I felt compelled to do a special post today about a couple of things. Those of you who have met me know that I am very professional in terms of scheduling and setting up appointments. I am extremely schedule-oriented and am at my best when I have a solid plan for the day. This is why I do not take same-day appointments. While I understand that many people are more spontaneous, that's just not my style when it comes to how I run my business. I have so many other responsibilities and life-roles outside of this aspect of my life, and I have found that the best way for me to manage all that I do is to schedule, schedule, schedule and have a concrete plan. Can I generally be a little flexible? Yes. However if a client has scheduled an appointment with me on a day where I have other responsibilities I always ensure that I have some buffer time scheduled in and make it known to my client that I have to leave at a certain time.

This has never been an issue until recently. Recently I had a potential client schedule an appointment with me for 11:45am. I offered this client a 10:45am appointment, but he opted for the 11:45. No problem. I provided the proper general location information so he could make plans to account for travel times and requested that he confirm with me later that evening, as is my usual process. He failed to confirm, but I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and would continue on as scheduled. I finally heard from him the morning of the appointment to confirm and everything seemed good to go for 11:45. He proceeded to text me within 45 mins of the appointment time indicating that he was leaving and would put my address into his gps and text back with an ETA. I had no idea where he was coming from, so I assumed he'd be on time and even told him it was fine if he got here early....I receive a text that says he will be to me by 12:05. At that time I told him 12:05 was okay, but I did need to be somewhere at 1:30 and would need to leave my studio a few minutes prior to 1pm. He responded asking if I would like to see him after I took care of my other responsibilities....This is where I get upset and annoyed.

First of all, this guy had all the information he needed to plan appropriately to get to me at the scheduled time. When he failed to be able to do that, I told him that 12:05 was fine but I'd need to leave a couple minutes early. He decided to take this to mean that I was going to "rush" him. Again, anyone who has seen me knows that I do not rush. I let him know that I would appreciate it if he would keep the appointment he scheduled, especially since I agreed to 12:05. At max his poor planning would have cost him 10 mins (5 from him being 20 minutes late, 5 from me needing to leave by 1pm). He sent another text inquiring about a time for rescheduling. I replied stating that because I felt that this had become too much of a hassle that I no longer wished to see him as a client at all. He then proceeded to ask me if I was serious because he'd driven an hour to see me. First of all, he hadn't driven an hour from the time he texted he was leaving and the time he told me his eta. If he had, there never would have been an issue at all! Second, its like he expected my whole afternoon to be available for him whenever he got around to getting here for a scheduled one-hour appointment. Not to mention, he was complaining that he'd driven an hour to see me and yet he was the one wanting to change the times and reschedule. He made no sense ultimately. He wanted his cake and to eat it, too. I attempted to explain that I did not want to see someone who was already making assumptions about being rushed when he was the one that was late due to poor planning. It would be a different story if this guy had run into a bad car accident or traffic jam; those things happen. He could have prevented being late by simply gps'ing my location hours prior to our appointment, but he decided to wait until the absolute last second. He wasn't even apologetic. He was a jerk about the whole thing. I'm sometimes astounded at the miserable attitudes of some hobbyists when this is supposed to be a fun escape from everyday life. I don't understand why they participate if they are seemingly, no matter what, always unhappy about something a provider says/does or doesn't do.

The moral of the story is that I am happy to see clients who respect my time as much as I respect theirs. I am not a strung out, low-end provider. I would much rather turn down a client who I am not comfortable with than see someone who is going to be a jerk about everything. I do this work because I enjoy providing feel-good vibes and positive energy, not because I want to be treated as a lesser being because I am being paid for my companionship. Yes, I fully recognize society's general viewpoint, but I would hope that at least some of you have some slightly more evolved thinking. Again, this has never ever been an issue prior to very recently, but since it did become an issue I decided that it warranted a post here. The intent is not to call anyone out (if I was going to do something stupid like that I probably wouldn't have purposely made "potential client" totally anonymous, ha), the message is simply to treat others with the same respect that you wish to be treated with. You're nice to me and you'll have the best time ever...you're a jerk to me in any form or fashion and I will happily never see you as a client. Thank you to all of my wonderful clients who all have the modicum of respect and professionalism with regard to your communications with me! You are the best a girl could ask for :-)
